Bubblegum and Lollipops

For a recent stock assignment, I shot my friend's daughters with the theme of greed expressed through monopoly.  The following three images, I feel, demonstrate that the best from the recent shoot I did with them.  It's poppy, bubblegum and lollipop style shooting which I thought fit their personas rather well.

It's no real secret that I've been pretty unsure of what area of photography I want to specialize.  I've always really liked pictures that make the viewer do a double or even a triple take while they try and figure out what's going on.  I have a sense of humor that most people don't appreciate, so I always dismissed my penchant for funny portraits as something that no one else would get, and would never get me hired.  Actually, I assumed the contrary.

During a recent portfolio review, many of the reviewers noted that there's some common thread throughout my work, but none of them could really put a finger on it until I sat down with Christie Deddens of Deddens and Deddens photographer reps.  She noticed I like quirky, funny, portraits.  I had told her about my recent foray into the film department during my senior year at Art Center and she asked me what films I liked.  I told her The Cohen Brothers, but afterwards wised I could have added Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series as well as the work of Terry Gilliam.

Regardless, she said I seem to like the offbeat, perhaps even WTF moments.  I wholeheartedly agreed and I told her about my reservations with the genre.  She said no, go for it!  If I'm passionate about it, someone will get it.  We talked for the remainder of the session about how I was clearly passionate about this type of work and how I should pursue it.  During the time we were talking, ideas for 3 photo shoots popped into my head, and for the first time in a long time, I felt invigorated and excited to make new work.  It's unfortunate, but I have been in a slump for quite some time.  Almost like a ship without a working compass in the daytime.  I feel like the more I go in any direction, the further I'll get away from where I might want to end up, so I stagnated.

I'm so excited about this epiphany that I don't even care that it came in my last two weeks at Art Center and renders most of the work in my portfolio useless.  I can honestly say I have 3 prints in my book that are remotely close to what I want to shoot now.  The strongest was a gift from my good friend Jesse Stone, who during a lighting test on location game me some gold and allowed me to recognize the kind of work that I want to make.

Over the past week since the meeting with Christie, I've begun to realign my photographic sensibilities and looking for an appropriate website.  I'm in the process of trying to buy whatthephoto.com for use in this endeavor.  It's owned by a blogger who used it for 3 months and then pulled it down.  I'm making an offer through godaddy.  Hopefully the guy will want a little extra cash for the holidays and I can score a rather cool site name that most will remember much easier than the car wreck that is my surname.

We as a team including Jin (graphics), have worked excruciating hours all term to accomplish persona opportunities for the future of office products and retail systems for Avery Dennison. All designs and concepts look forward to 2020.

Stop Fingering My Pages

Last week my fellow graduates and I participated in Speed Dating. It went well...I guess. I received a lot of positive feedback about my work. A couple people thought I should edit it down, but I'm not going to do that. I'm happy with the amount of work that is in there, but I might work on my pagination a bit before Industry night.

Here is a bit of advice I have to pass on for any soon to be graduates. For those of you planning on putting together a print portfolio for Speed Dating/Industry Night/Grad Show/Life, I would definitely consider purchasing nice quality sleeves for your prints. I was originally opposed to them and was planning on printing double sided and going sleeveless. Due to some unforeseen printing issues, that was no longer an option and I had to purchase sleeves. After an afternoon of Speed Dating and having nine people finger the pages of my book, I am so glad I had them. I was especially grateful for them when I discovered that one of my Speed Daters spits when he talks. If my print wouldn't have been in a sleeve, I might have had to cut somebody. Spit marks and greasy fingerprints all over your prints is not a good look...just saying...

I learned a lot about myself from this event. DS Reps was the most memorable of the bunch. Deborah pointed out a lot of my weaknesses, just from my introduction. It was a good experience that they love my composites and want to see more, but I to don't meet there needs. However, MHL might send me some work in January.

Hiroshi's speed dating expierience

Well, I would love to tell you people how amazing it was...I am indifferent. The most important thing I was looking for was practice. I wanted to practice talking about my work. I knew going in, I was not going to get any "work" from this experience. Some of the "daters" were really helpful and I got many compliments. A couple were not into the idea of me showing a portfolio on an iPad. Anyways, go to my blog. I got a new video up and some new work. I love you!!!

Speed Dating

I would like to say that things went well, but that was after the meetings. Leading up to it was a whole event in itself! I was nerves for a entire month thinking about how I would present myself and my work how they would receive it. In prepping her the event we were asked to have ready some business cards, promo cards, and a well thought out portfolio. At the same time I am also enrolled in a portfolio development class that help me a lot with my book and promo pieces. I advice others to start preparing for this event before 8th term. In the beginning of the event the guest stood up and introduced them selves and we followed them but with a little personal extra statement about ourselves. We had 9 guest and had 15 minutes to interview with each person. They all had a different way of viewing my work. They all pretty much told me the same thing about my book and some gave me good advice on how to go about improving it. One guest started by asking me to talk about myself first, and what drew me to photography. Another started by looking at my book before she said a word to me. A couple of the guest loved all of my work and the rest picked through it and singled out what interested them. In my opinion it was about how they could use my work in there medium and that was plain to see, but a couple wanted to see new work and give real advice on the industry and how to market my work. All in all it was a great experience and would love to do it again.

Shot from last weekend. I traveled to this location to create a bg plate for a car. However, I love it more as a landscape. I also shot a video and I'm in the process of editing all of the footage. -Joe

i've been working on a series of natural portraits in the studio... this image is a departure from the series but i wanted to share..

Failure

I intended to shoot mountain bikers over the past weekend, but the rain kept them inside.  They don't mind being wet as much as the futility of trying to climb a muddy hill with 2 inch wide tires.  I'll be able to shoot this coming Thanksgiving weekend a number of times as it appears it will be bright and sunny.

I understand this will affect my grade, but at this point, I didn't have a choice.

The Sing Sing SIng video

My piece was about an interpretation of a space. It was less about the people in my video interpreting the space but more about what I would like to see in the space. I chose a song to go with it. The song is by Hank Williams. The tempo f the song is relatively quick so I chose to edit my video with the same Idea. I am happy with the results so far but I would still like to shoot more.

So my plan for this video has changed some. I originally wanted to use this video to document the making of an installation piece. I have now decided to incorporate it into the installation, probably by having it projected in the room with the piece. We'll see how it comes together.

Scouted the trail...

I've scouted the El Prieto mountain bike trail.  Apparently it's being poached on a regular basis.  Groups going up and doing trail maintenance are hoping that the trail will survive what is supposed to be a very wet winter, while those willing to poach it are thankful for the maintenance and see it as something to be enjoyed instead of waiting for next year.

Also, an unauthorized pump track was constructed in an equestrian area of Hahamonga Watershed Park at the parking lot for El Prieto.  I'm going to go with a group of bikers and shoot the trail in it's current condition as well as people riding it this coming weekend.
